You serve twelve cities. You rank in one.

Most service businesses cover a wide area and have exactly one page saying so. A list of city names in the footer, maybe a sentence on the homepage. Google reads that the way a customer would: you're a one-city company, and the folks three cities over are somebody else's problem.

Real coverage means pages that actually say something about working in each place. What you do there, what the homes are like, who you've served. It's slower than a footer list, and it's the difference between showing up in one map pack and showing up in six.

You already drive there. You should rank there.

It's quiet. Too quiet.

Every owner in the trades knows the feeling. The phone slows in late October, the schedule thins out, and it's easy to read that as a season rather than a signal.

Here's the uncomfortable part: a slow winter is usually the one where nobody did the work. Rankings earned in November are what fill the calendar in March. Review requests you send now are what close jobs in spring. The businesses that go dark until the weather turns are the same ones starting from zero when it does.

Happy Halloween. January is the scary part.

You're planning 2027 right now.

Maybe not formally. But the decisions that set next year's marketing budget get made in the fourth quarter, usually based on a gut read of how this year went rather than what the numbers actually say.

The useful version of that conversation needs three things: what each channel cost, how many leads it produced, and what those leads were worth. Most businesses can answer the first one and guess at the other two. That's how good channels get cut and bad ones get renewed.

Budget season goes a lot better when you're reading instead of guessing.

Could you take two weeks off?

Not whether you could get away with it. Whether the business would keep producing leads while you were gone. For most owners the honest answer is no, because the pipeline runs on them personally — they stop, it stops.

That's the difference between marketing you do and a system that runs. Listings stay accurate whether or not you touch them. Campaigns keep serving. SEO keeps compounding. Calls keep getting tracked and attributed, so when you get back you can see exactly what came in and where it came from.

Build it right and the phone rings while you're gone.

Three seconds. That's all you get.

That's roughly how long someone waits for a page to load on their phone before backing out — usually on a cell connection, standing in a driveway, comparing you to two other companies. They don't wait to see what you offer. They just leave.

The usual culprits are boring and fixable. Photos uploaded straight from a camera at full size. A homepage slideshow nobody asked for. Six tracking scripts from tools you stopped using. None of it changes what your site says; all of it changes whether anyone reads it.

Fast isn't a feature anymore. It's the entry fee.

Even referrals Google you first.

Word of mouth still works. It just doesn't work the way it used to. Someone gets your name from a neighbor, then looks you up before dialing — and what they find either confirms the recommendation or quietly kills it.

Three stars and no recent reviews undoes a good referral. So does a website that looks abandoned, or a listing with an old phone number. The referral got you considered. Everything after that is on your online presence, and most owners have never actually looked at theirs the way a stranger would.

Search your own business name. Be honest about what comes back.

You answer the phone. We handle the rest.

That's the arrangement. You're good at the work and at closing the customer standing in front of you. Everything upstream of that — getting found, getting called, and knowing which effort actually produced the call — is a full-time job that nobody running a crew has time for.

So we run it. Local listings kept accurate everywhere people search. Google and Meta campaigns aimed at buyers rather than tire-kickers. SEO that puts you in the map pack and in AI answers. Call tracking so no lead goes unaccounted for, and a dashboard you can open at 11pm if you feel like it.

One team. One point of contact. Your phone rings.

Your holiday hours are wrong.

Almost everyone's are. Thanksgiving, the week of Christmas, New Year's Day, the random Friday you close early — Google shows whatever it has on file, and what it has on file is usually last year's guess or nothing at all.

The cost isn't abstract. Someone drives over, finds a locked door, and leaves a one-star review about it. Or they see "hours may differ" next to your name and call the competitor whose listing looks certain. Fifteen minutes of work in October prevents both.

Set them now, while it's quiet. Future you is busy.

The first cold night is your busiest day.

Here's the part most owners miss: the calls you take that night were decided days earlier. Someone's furnace made a noise, they searched, they read a few reviews, and they picked who to call before anything actually broke. By the time the phone rings, the choosing is over.

Which means October is the month that matters, not November. Service pages that answer real questions, a Google Business Profile that's current, and enough recent reviews to look like the safe choice.

You can't schedule the weather. You can be the name they already picked.

Your cheapest lead already bought from you.

You spent real money earning that customer the first time — ads, SEO, the estimate, the follow-up. Then the job wrapped and they never heard from you again. Meanwhile you're paying full price to go find someone new.

A simple email list fixes most of this. Seasonal reminders, a maintenance nudge, a note when you add a service they'd want. It's the least expensive marketing you can run and the most consistently ignored, because it isn't as satisfying as watching new leads come in.

Repeat work doesn't need a sales pitch. Just a reminder you exist.
