Migrating from GP to a new ERP? Don't start with platform selection. Start with this.
Most companies open their GP migration conversation with: "Should we go to Business Central or Acumatica?"
That's the wrong first question.
Before you evaluate a single platform, you need to know the answers to these three things:
1. Your Current State Reality: How is GP actually being used not how it was designed to be used? Every customization. Every workaround. Every integration. Which processes are genuine business advantages vs habits you've never questioned? Where is GP the constraint and where would process redesign help more than new software?
Until you map this, you can't scope a migration. You can't assess platform fit. And you definitely can't set a realistic timeline or budget.
2. Your Data Reality: What has to migrate vs what can archive? What does your data actually look like and what cleanup does it need before it moves? What reporting and analytics are you dependent on that don't exist natively in most new platforms?
This step alone reveals more budget risk than any other part of the project.
3. Your Team Reality: Who holds the institutional knowledge of how GP works? What's the real adoption challenge, not the optimistic one in the project plan? Where is change management going to be hardest and have you actually budgeted for it?
Once you have honest answers to all three, platform selection becomes straightforward.
Without them, you're choosing software before you understand the problem you're solving.
That's how migrations take 18 months instead of 6.
