Braille and tactile printing don't come up often in print marketing, yet millions of people rely on them every day. So we broke down how those raised dots actually get made, because there isn't just one method. The right choice depends on the job.
π Paper embossing: metal pins punch dots into heavy braille stock. Ideal for books, statements, and high-volume runs.
π¦ Die embossing: hard dies press dots into cartons and labels, often inline with die-cutting. It's how most medicine packaging gets its braille.
π¨ Screen printing: a thick layer of ink or clear varnish is laid down in one pass, then UV-cured into raised dots. Great for labels and short packaging runs.
Digital raised UV: an inkjet stacks clear varnish layer by layer, doming each dot to full height. Perfect for signage, short runs, and prototypes.
Here's the part that's easy to miss: the method is only half the story. Readability lives in the details.
A dot needs to sit around 0.02 inches tall on paper to be read by touch, and a little higher on signage. Double-sided pages use interpoint, where the front and back dots are offset so they never collide. And good producers verify dot height with micrometer gauges or 3D machine vision, because if the height or spacing misses the standard, fingers simply can't read it.
Accessibility isn't a nice-to-have. It's how you reach every customer.
