Six years of clearing out old electronics at a Fortune 500 paper company led to one of the most important partnerships in our history.

When Marty Duggan needed to responsibly retire e-waste piling up in a Boston storage room, he found give IT. get IT.—then a young, grassroots organization called ITE. What started as nine pallets of old servers and switches (roughly 20,000 pounds) became a relationship that shaped who we are today.

Marty didn't just donate equipment. He rewrote the transfer agreement that's still in use today. He championed us to Sappi's leadership. He joined our board. And when he retired after 28 years in corporate IT, he came back—driving 2.5 hours to Belfast three days a week for two years—to mentor our co-founder Jodi Martin through the transition from doing everything herself to leading a growing team.

The "2 Second Lean" framework he introduced is still used by every member of our staff.

"He taught me that the little things, the simple things, can make a big impact," Jodi says.

This summer, our technology is showing up in two very different Maine communities, and both stories are worth telling.

At Breaking the Cycle, a residential recovery program for women, donated computers are used every single day by staff, clinicians, and residents alike. Executive Director Josie Barker shared that the technology has helped her team provide better care while saving the organization money it desperately needs elsewhere.

Nearly 200 miles north in Jackman, our Build IT program gave students at Forest Hills Consolidated School the chance to build their own desktop computers from scratch. The best part? They got to take the finished machines home. Principal Teresa Lovejoy said the feedback was all positive, and program partner Elizabeth Caruso described the students as excited, attentive, and engaged every step of the way.

Different communities, same story: reliable technology opens doors and builds confidence.

Melissa Mitchell can tell you exactly where you can and cannot get cell service near Shead High School. It is the kind of detail you only know if you live it.

Two thirds of Shead's students live "up country" in Washington County, where cable does not always reach and satellite internet is sometimes the only option. A school laptop only goes so far without reliable internet at home, and a lot of kids do not even want to risk bringing a brand new school MacBook home in the first place.

So this year, give IT. get IT. brought 20 desktop computer kits to Eastport. Every Monday after school, about 10 students showed up to build the machines themselves with science teacher Ian Campbell, learning every component, upgrading the RAM, and making each kit truly their own.

"Our kids took to them like ducks to water," said Principal Melissa Mitchell. "They loved it."

Because these computers belong to the students and not the school, they can use them for anything: games, art, chatting with friends, no restrictions. For many, it is the first computer their family has ever owned outright.

This spring, five graduating seniors received laptops through the Eastport Digital Equity Committee, and give IT. get IT. matched that gift, bringing the total to 10, half of the graduating class, headed off to college, the military, and their own businesses with a computer of their own in hand.

From the Army to IT support: meet Nate.
Nate Gariepy didn't plan on a career in IT. He was headed toward surgical technology after leaving the Army until the program he'd enrolled in shut down and he needed multiple surgeries of his own. So he pivoted, going back to a curiosity his dad sparked in him as a kid, and earned a degree in software engineering.
A VA vocational rehabilitation program through the Togus VA connected him to give IT. get IT. His first role in receiving didn't work for his body, just a month after surgery. Instead of letting him go, our team looked at what he could do and asked if he'd take on IT support instead.
"Rather than letting me go or leaving me without options, they worked with me to find a better fit," Nate said. "Instead of focusing on my limitations, they looked at my strengths."
Today Nate provides remote IT support to participants across Maine, all the way from Arizona. He's working toward a Salesforce certification and finishing his MBA this September.
His story is a good reminder of what this organization is really about: not just filling a role, but investing in a person.
