📔 Overview: People with disabilities often experience suboptimal healthcare due to inaccessible medical equipment, limited provider training, and missed opportunities for preventive care, diagnosis, and treatment. Addressing these inequities requires preparing future healthcare professionals through meaningful disability-focused education.
Drawing on lived experience and patient stories, this presentation will illustrate how disability-focused learning experiences were developed and integrated into a medical school curriculum in partnership with a simulation center. Participants will explore approaches that engage people with disabilities as educators and provide learners with practical experience through patient interviews, safe transfer training, and other experiential activities.
By integrating lived experience with simulation-based education, health professions programs can help learners develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to provide more equitable care for people with disabilities.
