Microsoft will never lock your screen and demand you call a toll-free number to fix a virus. Those terrifying warnings are just full-screen pop-up windows designed to create panic. Try pressing Escape, or even Alt+F4 to close the current window. If that doesn't work, restart your machine. Most of the time, the threat disappears completely. If the pop-up returns after a reboot, you might have a malicious extension installed. If you still need help, our Central Iowa team can tame it for you. Tech Tip Tuesday 🐾

Restarting actually fixes things. Not because it is magic, because it clears out memory that has been filling up since the last time the machine was truly off.

Closing the lid is not the same thing. A laptop that only ever sleeps can go months without a real restart.

Still slow after one? That is when it is worth bringing it in.

Tech Tip Tuesday 🐾

If your laptop runs hot and the fan never stops, it is usually dust. Years of it, packed into the heat sink where you cannot see it.

The machine slows itself down on purpose to keep from cooking. That is why it starts feeling old before it actually is.

Canned air through the vents helps a little. Getting inside helps a lot, and that part is worth letting somebody else do.

A clicking sound from your external hard drive is not something to ignore. Your drive is failing, and trying to get it to work over and over again makes things worse and quickly eliminates your chances of professional data recovery. That clicking is the read/write heads failing to initialize, and the possibility of platter damage only increases with each click.

The only thing you should do is immediately unplug it and bring it to a professional, such as our shop in West Des Moines. We can evaluate it, and if we cannot do the recovery in-shop, we partner with one of the leading data-recovery companies in the US that can.
