Why can CMYK printing look duller than what you see on your screen?
Monitors are backlit, illuminating color from behind, and they display images using thousands of tiny points of light in RGB color mode.
Printing uses CMYK, which builds color by mixing ink on paper. When a file converts from RGB to CMYK, colors shift, and some of that on-screen vibrancy doesn't carry over the same way once it's printed.
A few things can help close that gap:
▪️Rich black: swapping a standard black for a rich black (mixing in some cyan, magenta, and yellow along with the black) gives you more depth than black ink alone.
▪️Contrast: pushing your contrast up a bit often makes the piece read as more vibrant once it's printed.
▪️Paper stock: a gloss stock absorbs less ink, so it builds up on the surface and looks richer. A more natural or uncoated stock soaks the ink in, which tends to look duller by comparison.
