March’s Artifact of the Month: The Commodore PET

Before they were a household name in computing, Commodore was actually a calculator company facing a declining market in the mid-1970s. But everything changed when engineer Chuck Peddle convinced president Jack Tramiel that the future was in computers. Using his own KIM-1 single-board computer design as a blueprint, Peddle created the "all-in-one" PET. It was cheekily named after the "Pet Rock" fad of the time and secured its place in history as part of the "1977 Computer Trinity," alongside the Apple II and the TRS-80.
