Last week, we visited Realogile Secondary School in Alexandra, where learners continue to demonstrate resilience despite significant resource constraints, including the daily reality of carrying desks and chairs between classes due to limited infrastructure.

Together with the Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies, Hon. Solly Malatsi, we recognised and celebrated the Top 10 Performing Students - , presenting them with learning devices in acknowledgment of their academic excellence and commitment.

We were also joined by Othabetswe Ranwashe, a former learner of Realogile Secondary School and now a valued member of our team, fulfilling a beautiful mission that begins with his own school.

He shared how access to connectivity played a critical role in improving his academic performance and enabling him to achieve distinctions. He further encouraged current matriculants to remain focused, persevere, and continue striving for excellence despite the challenges they face.

The visit highlighted the critical importance of equitable access to digital tools and connectivity in under-resourced schools, and how such interventions unlock learner potential while supporting long-term educational and digital opportunities.

It is one thing to read about "digital progress" in a report, and another thing entirely to see the impact it has when a teacher and their students are finally given the tools to thrive.

Unfortunately, for 17,000 schools in South Africa, that door is still closed.

Why does this matter? When a school is connected, "talent" meets "opportunity." It’s about classroom value - moving beyond the admin office and putting the world’s resources directly into the hands of our educators and learners.

Shireen Powell’s latest piece in Daily Maverick takes a hard look at why this gap still exists, and why we cannot afford to wait any longer.
