Dense routing here, a large copper plane there – and almost no copper in another area. Electrically, there may be good reasons for all of these design decisions. In PCB manufacturing, however, the resulting copper distribution has consequences.

This is what copper balance is about.

During plating, copper is deposited onto the outer layers and into the drilled holes. If the copper density varies significantly across the board, achieving a uniform copper build-up becomes more difficult. Some areas can plate differently from others.

At Eurocircuits, we use the Plating Index to assess this effect. It is calculated from the copper density and its distribution on the outer layers and indicates how favourable the layout is for uniform plating.

Copper balance is not limited to the outer layers. The copper distribution across the complete build-up also matters. Large differences between layers can contribute to mechanical stress and, together with the material, layer construction and thermal processes, influence bow and twist.

What does this mean for PCB design?

Check not only where copper is needed electrically, but also how it is distributed. Avoid large differences in copper density where possible and add copper in suitable areas when necessary.

πŸ’‘ The copper pattern defines the circuit. Its distribution also influences how well the PCB can be manufactured.

🏍️⚑ From Rookie of the Year to an even bigger challenge

After making an impressive MotoStudent debut in 2025 and taking home the Rookie of the Year award πŸ†, Electric Superbike Twente is already preparing for its next challenge.

The student team from the University of Twente and Hogeschool Saxion is rebuilding its electric motorcycle from the ground up, with a strong focus on reducing weight, improving reliability, and optimising its systems. πŸ”§

A big part of this development is taking place behind the scenes, where the powertrain team is redesigning key electronics and introducing new solutions to make the bike safer, smarter, and more efficient. ⚑

With plenty of hardware upgrades underway, the team is laying the foundation for an even stronger performance in the 2027 MotoStudent competition. 🏁

A PCB is not a standard product

At first glance, a printed circuit board (PCB) may look like a simple carrier for electronic components. But a PCB is much more than that.

A PCB is a custom-manufactured electronic part. It provides the mechanical structure of an electronic assembly, creates the electrical connections between components, and can also perform important functions such as thermal management.

Unlike many electronic components that are produced as identical parts in very large quantities, every PCB is unique. Even if two PCBs perform the same function, they differ in their layout, buildup, materials, and the specific requirements of the application.

This is the special challenge for PCB manufacturers: turning an individual design created by engineers into a reliable physical product with precision and consistency.

From material selection and drilling to imaging, lamination, plating, and surface finishing, every manufacturing step must be carefully aligned with the PCB design. Every decision made during development influences manufacturability, quality, and the reliability of the final electronic assembly.

A PCB is therefore not just a purchasing item. It is part of the product development process and a key element of every electronic device.

As engineers’ best friend, we share our knowledge to help designers create reliable, manufacturable PCBs. πŸ’‘

β˜€οΈπŸš‘ Solar Team Eindhoven is taking sustainable healthcare to a whole new level with Stella Juva β€” the world’s first solar-powered ambulance.

Developed by 23 students from Eindhoven University of Technology, this ambitious project combines solar mobility with emergency healthcare, with the vision of making medical support more accessible in remote and hard-to-reach areas. 🌍πŸ₯

But turning sunlight into a reliable source of both mobility and medical power comes with some serious engineering challenges. βš‘πŸ”‹ From an entirely new electrical system to highly demanding technology, the team had to push innovation to its limits.

So, how does Stella Juva actually make it possible? And what does it take to build a solar-powered ambulance from the ground up?

πŸ‘‰ Discover the technology, challenges, and ideas behind Stella Juva in the full blog! πŸš€
