Why do 80 % of my components match to Pin 1 orientation and 20% do not match.

Many PCB designers eventually notice the same thing: most components in the library follow one Pin 1 orientation, but some suddenly don’t. The reason is often hidden in the standards behind the footprint library.

IPC 7351A defines Pin 1 in the upper-left corner, while IEC 61188-7, widely used in Europe since 2009, places Pin 1 in the lower-left corner. Both standards use counterclockwise rotation, but the different zero-point definition creates the famous “80/20 mismatch”.

This may sound minor, but during assembly it becomes critical. Pick-and-place machines rely entirely on correct orientation data. If Pin 1 is inconsistently defined inside the ECAD library, components can be rotated incorrectly during production causing assembly errors, malfunctioning hardware or costly debugging.

The real problem is not the standard itself. The real problem is inconsistency inside the component library.

This is why assembly verification has become an essential part of modern PCB manufacturing workflows. A manufacturable PCB design also requires a complete, machine-readable BOM.

The Bill of Material (BOM) is one of the most critical interfaces between hardware development and manufacturing. It defines which components must be sourced, placed and assembled on the PCB. Missing or unclear information can lead to sourcing delays, wrong parts, manual clarification loops and inaccurate price calculations.

At minimum, a BOM should contain:
• Manufacturer Part Number (MPN) or Generic Part Number (GPN)
• Reference designators

But for a smooth and reliable assembly process, this is often not enough.

From a manufacturing perspective, the “perfect BOM” also includes:
• Manufacturer name
• Quantity
• Placement information (YES/NO)

Accurate BOM data enables automated sourcing, faster quoting and a seamless transfer into production.

At Eurocircuits, BOM upload and validation are integrated directly into the Visualizer workflow. Combined with PCB data and pick & place information, developers can verify early whether all manufacturing data is complete and consistent before production starts.

A good PCB design is important.A complete BOM makes it manufacturable. 🛠️

Edge connectors are a well-established method for connecting PCBs directly to each other. Typical applications include expansion cards, daughter boards and memory modules, where electrical contacts are routed to the PCB edge and plugged directly into a mating socket.

What appears straightforward mechanically places specific demands on PCB design and manufacturing.

Reliable functionality depends on several factors: precise contact geometry, suitable gold plating, controlled tolerances and correctly defined keep-out areas. Chamfered PCB edges also play an important role, simplifying insertion and reducing mechanical stress during assembly.

For PCB designers, this means that edge connectors should not be treated as a purely mechanical feature. They are a Design for Manufacturing topic.

At Eurocircuits, these requirements are supported through automated DFM analysis in the Visualizer. Potential manufacturing issues can be identified before ordering, helping developers avoid unnecessary design iterations and move faster towards manufacturable prototypes.
