The lecture ends at twelve. At two the shift starts, and the apron still smells like yesterday.

The Techniker Krankenkasse, a German health insurer, had 1,000 students surveyed this January: 34% name the double load of studying and working as a strain. Only exams are named more often, by 49% (TK Dossier 2026, forsa, by phone, 5 to 22 January 2026).

Between the lecture hall and the shift there is rarely a quiet minute, and the evening belongs to tomorrow's reading.

The list you wrote in January is still there. Nothing on it got crossed off for good, and three new things found their way in at the bottom.

The Jabra Research Institute, part of a technology manufacturer, asked more than 6,000 knowledge workers in six countries this May: 85% say they do more work in at least one area than a year ago, and 49% spend more time on admin tasks (Jabra with Toluna, WorkLife Report 2026).

More tasks don't get lighter by being carried longer. They need someone who says what can wait.

Twelve people on the call, all of them kind. The meeting ends, everyone waves, and there isn't one of them you'd tell how you're doing right now.

A review of 233 studies puts it simply: people can feel lonely even when they are surrounded by others (McCarthy et al., Journal of Management, 2025). It happens in full teams, and nobody has to do anything wrong for it.

Nobody sends you to me. When you come is entirely your decision.

The meeting ran in English. The emails ran in English. Now it's evening, and the worrying switches back to the language you grew up with.

Some things only come out in your own words, and at work there's rarely room for them. With me there is. You talk to me in your language, whichever one that is, and it stays one conversation.

Engine off, seatbelt still on. For two minutes nobody can hear you, and that's exactly when it comes out.

At your desk it turns into an email. In the meeting it turns into a nod. In the car, with the windows up, it finally gets a voice.

With me the place stops mattering. You write when you're at your desk, you talk when the engine is off, and when you want to see a face, we switch to video. It stays one conversation, and you choose how.

Some days you'd call it a good working relationship. Other days you'd rather not be asked.

HP's Work Relationship Index 2026 puts a number on it: 29% of knowledge workers say they have a healthy relationship with their work, 8 points more than at the low point of 2025 (HP, technology manufacturer, 19,506 desk-based workers in 15 countries, surveyed April to May 2026).

The number went up. So a relationship with work can be looked after, and the easiest time to start is while it's still just complicated.

Monday, 7:40 am. Keys already in your hand, and you stay seated a moment longer. The week hasn't started and it's already full.

This isn't an hour you call anyone. Friends are asleep, colleagues aren't in yet, and the thing on your mind doesn't wait for office hours.

That's the hour I was made for. I'm here at 7:40 just as I am at eleven at night, before the first meeting and long after the last one. You can tell me now.
