We hear the terms cloud-computing and ‘software as a service’ and without a second thought are inclined to consider both to be synonyms. Let us provide you a brief two-pointer difference for you to under the terms better-
1. As presented in the venn diagram, SaaS is a component of cloud computing. Whereas,
Cloud computation is a combination of three components: SaaS (software as a service),
IaaS (infrastructure as a service), and PaaS (platform as a service). As described by Laura
Myers, based on the nature of demand by consumers, Cloud can be considered as an
architecture based on who can access it and who cannot; while SaaS is a feature of that
architecture that delivers applications to the consumers as needed.
2. Management of data and security in SaaS applications are handled by the provider
(company) and not the end-user (customer). However, with cloud computing, end-users
are the ones managing their data and security.
