One for Sorrow, Two for Joy

Another little gem from the Painting Prize that, perhaps unsurprisingly, found a new home.

Painted in egg tempera, Sophia Ponté’s One for Sorrow, Two for Joy takes its title from the traditional nursery rhyme about seeing magpies. Sophia describes the work as being about how “happiness and loss often follow each other closely in life”, reflecting on cycles of life and death in the natural world.

The materials are an important part of the piece too. The painting is framed in bark taken from a fallen oak tree on Sophia’s family farm, creating a direct connection between the subject of the work and the natural environment it draws from.

Sophia is a London-based artist working across drawing, printmaking and painting, often combining traditional techniques with scavenged natural materials.

This work has now sold, but many other paintings from the Well Hung Painting Prize are still available to view and purchase on our website.

Did you spot this little gem by Chris Wright in the Well Hung Painting Prize?

Measuring just 15 × 10 cm, Petherbridge Way is part of an ongoing series of 100 caravan paintings exploring nostalgia, holiday memories and the stories attached to these familiar everyday objects.

Chris began the series after being invited to make two works for Art on a Postcard, and has now completed around 80 paintings. As he puts it, “Every caravan has its own story to tell and most people have a caravan story.”

The Painting Prize exhibition has now finished, but all of the works remain listed on our website to view and purchase.

Petherbridge Way has sold, but there are still plenty of brilliant works from the exhibition available online on the Well Hung website.

Ngai Ning Yu’s Interior Landscape looks at the curtain as a space between inside and outside, something that both conceals and reveals.

The painting was informed by the warm glow of homes Ngai would pass on her walk back home. The rich orange tones also recall the walls of her childhood living room, bringing a personal sense of memory and home into the work.

Ngai is a Hong Kong-born, London-based painter whose practice focuses on light, lived interiors and ideas around home. She graduated from UAL with First Class Honours in Fine Art Painting in 2025 and was the overall winner of the Delphian Open Call 2025.

Kirsty Tanner’s Sky Form is part of a series of paintings capturing moments or memories of sky.

Working without preparatory sketches, Kirsty builds each composition intuitively through layers of acrylic paint and oil stick, allowing the painting to develop as she works.

The softer, shifting painted surface is interrupted by bold areas of negative space, which Kirsty uses to suggest elements of architecture and the built environment.

Based in Manchester, Kirsty is a Scottish artist working across painting, textiles and collage. Her practice brings together memories of the rural Scottish landscape with her interest in Modernist design and Brutalist architecture.

Julian Scott describes Muggy as “an encounter between intention and intuition”, with the reconciliation of the two central to the meaning of the painting.

As he explains, “I have allowed the materials a voice and the opportunity to play a part in the animation of its surface and the expression of its identity.”

The title Muggy may be whimsical, but Julian also sees it as a link to wider landscapes and to “some of the atmospheric conditions, air, through which we move”.

Julian studied sculpture before completing an MA in Painting, and later taught at a number of universities and art schools in the UK. Since leaving teaching in 2021, he has concentrated fully on his own painting practice.

We love the bold colour, loose gestural marks and layered texture in Lucy Merriman’s expressive painting.

Lucy works intuitively with oil, acrylic and marble dust, allowing the materials and process to lead the painting. As she describes it, “one gestural mark informing the next”, with a focus on texture, surface and colour.

Her work draws on both the urban edges of Hackney Marsh and the landscapes of the Lake District, bringing together ideas around place, memory and imagination.

Lucy is an East London-based artist who moved from textile design into painting and printmaking in 2020.

Loose, oily brushmarks move across Jan Valik’s painting, suggesting a landscape without ever settling into anything too fixed or descriptive, with the title alluding to a remembered or perhaps imagined place.

Jan describes his paintings as “fluid territories and thresholds”, moving between space and atmosphere, land and memory. Layers of colour and brushwork build across the surface, allowing the image to emerge through the process of painting itself.

Jan studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague and the Royal College of Art in London, and has exhibited internationally.

We love the energy in Susan Isaac’s painting, with its strong structure, sweeping foreground and thickly painted, expressive sky.

Susan was drawn to the mix of modern and historic architecture in the area, particularly the monumental gas holder struts and the latticework they create against the skyline.

As Susan explains, “The open expanse of foreground, thrust forward by a heavy sky, is a balance within the composition and funnels the eye towards the main subject and back along the canal edge to distant structures.”

Susan trained in sculpture and previously worked professionally investigating historic landscapes before returning to painting and sculpture full time. Her work has won several awards, and she was a finalist on Landscape Artist of the Year in 2025.

We love the bold colours and simple forms in this painting by Jonathan Rockefeller, which give the scene a dreamlike, almost cinematic quality.

Jonathan’s practice spans painting, sculpture and filmmaking, with a particular interest in atmosphere, storytelling and mythology.

For this work, he describes a quiet moment by the sea: “He sat there long enough for the afternoon light to shift across the floor, watching the horizon and waiting for someone to arrive.”

That sense of waiting runs through the painting, from the open doorway to the empty horizon and the long shadows across the floor.

We love the expressive mark making in this abstracted landscape by Richard McRae

‘Fields Near Eagle Heights’ marks an important turning point in Richard McRae’s practice, signalling a move towards a flatter, more simplified pictorial space.

For Richard, the painting marked an important shift in his practice towards a flatter pictorial space. The landscape itself is deliberately straightforward, depicting fields near Eagle Heights in Eynsford, south-east London, but the painting gradually moves away from direct representation through its simplified forms and blocks of colour.

Richard began the work on location before taking it back to his studio, where he continued to develop it over a period of around three months.

Richard has been painting for more than fifty years, having studied art in Canada before exhibiting in Montreal and later moving to London.

Fields Near Eagle Heights is currently on display as part of the Well Hung Painting Prize exhibition, continuing until 29 August.
