We get it. Nobody wants to be the person who took the website offline. But here’s the thing: going down isn’t a required part of moving.

Ducks Unlimited was in exactly that spot. Big platform, lots of content, and it needed to stay up. We planned it out carefully and moved them with zero downtime. They ended up with a faster mobile experience and more room to grow, too.

Quick question, and be honest! When is the last time you actually restored something from a backup?

Not checked that the backup ran. Actually brought it back and made sure everything worked.

For a lot of folks the answer is “um... never?” And that’s more common than you’d think. The backups are there, everyone feels covered, and then the day comes when you need them and it takes way longer than anyone expected. Or nobody’s quite sure who’s supposed to do what.

It’s worth thinking about how long your business could really go without your most important app, and whether your plan matches that. It doesn’t have to be complicated. It just has to be real.

Here’s something we see all the time.

Someone opens their bill, winces a little, and figures that’s just what cloud costs now.

Usually it isn’t. It’s a test environment someone forgot to shut off last spring. Or a database sized for a launch-day rush that never came back. None of it is a big mistake. It’s just a bunch of small ones that add up quietly.

The fix usually isn’t dramatic, either. Sometimes it’s just looking at what’s running, what’s actually being used, and how the app behaves day to day. We tend to find money hiding in the gap between what someone guessed at launch and what the app really needs.
