If your team does any of these three things during an incident, you may have an operational blind spot.

Most security teams only discover these gaps when an incident puts their processes under pressure. By then, the consequences may already be costly.

Rather than waiting for an incident to expose the problem, look for these three warning signs:

1️⃣ An operator has to ask, “Which camera is that?”

When an alert is triggered, the relevant camera feed should be immediately available. If operators must manually identify and locate the correct camera while an incident is unfolding, valuable response time is being lost.

2️⃣ Multiple systems report the same event, but the connection is missed

An access control alarm is followed 30 seconds later by a motion event at the same door. Are they separate alerts or part of the same incident?

If the systems cannot correlate these events, operators are left to make that connection themselves under pressure and often without the full context.

3️⃣ The response depends on who is on shift

When incident outcomes vary depending on the operator involved, critical procedures are likely based on individual knowledge rather than a standardized process.

Experience will always matter, but an effective response should not depend on the right person being in the control room at the right time.

These issues are easy to overlook during routine operations. They become visible when the team is under pressure, precisely when there is little room to address them.

All three point to the same underlying issue: disconnected information and inconsistent response processes. Both can be addressed before the next incident.

“Single pane of glass” is a term used frequently in security technology, including by us.

But what should it actually mean in a security operations environment?

At its core, it should go beyond simply bringing multiple systems onto the same screen.

❌ What it doesn’t mean:

Displaying multiple camera feeds on one screen is not system unification. It is still video monitoring, even if everything is visible in one place.

✅ What it should mean:

A true single pane of glass brings information and operational control from different security subsystems such as video, access control, intrusion detection, fire, alarms, and intercoms, into one working environment.

That means the information is:

1. Unified: Systems are integrated at the operational level rather than simply displayed next to one another.

2. Correlated in real time: Related events from different systems can be connected and presented as part of the same incident rather than as isolated notifications.

3. Actionable from one interface: Operators can investigate, respond, escalate, and follow defined procedures without constantly moving between separate applications.

A useful way to evaluate this is to look at what happens during an actual incident. When multiple systems generate related events, does the platform bring that information together automatically? Can the operator understand the situation and take the necessary actions from the same environment?

That is where the value of a single pane of glass becomes clear. The benefit is not simply that systems look connected. It is that they operate as part of a coordinated security workflow.

In many facilities, the first response to a security gap is straightforward: increase coverage. Add cameras, sensors, and additional points of visibility.

❓ Myth or not?
"Our legacy systems are too complex to integrate."

“We want to bring our security systems together, but our existing infrastructure makes integration too difficult.”

This is a common concern for organizations considering PSIM, and it is understandable. Security environments are often built gradually, with equipment, software, and systems from different vendors added over many years. Replacing all of that would be expensive and disruptive.

But PSIM does not require organizations to replace every system they already use.

It's a fair question. And, as with most strategic decisions in physical security, the answer depends less on the technology and more on the operational realities you're managing today.

Here are 5 questions worth asking before you decide:

1️⃣ Are your security systems talking to each other?

If your cameras, access control, alarms, and fire systems each operate in their own interface with no shared data, no correlated alerts, and no unified view, you're already experiencing the problem PSIM is designed to solve.
