Your business may have plenty of internet bandwidth and still experience slow, unreliable Wi-Fi. The issue is not always your internet service provider. Aging wireless equipment, weak coverage, interference, poor access-point placement, outdated cabling, and increased device demand can all affect how your network performs inside the office.

Here are five signs it may be time to upgrade your Wi-Fi infrastructure:

1. Employees regularly complain about slow connections.

If pages take too long to load, cloud apps lag, or files take too long to sync, your Wi-Fi may be struggling to support daily demand.

2. Video meetings freeze, drop, or sound distorted.

Choosing business internet is not as simple as picking the plan with the biggest download-speed number.

The right connection depends on how your team actually works:

Your Internet provider’s modem gets you online. It does not provide the same protection as a business-grade firewall.

Many businesses assume the device installed by their Internet Service Provider is all they need to protect their network. While an ISP modem or gateway may include basic routing and limited firewall features, it is not designed to deliver the visibility, control, and layered threat protection of a dedicated business firewall. SonicWall notes that an ISP modem is a router with some firewall capability, while a SonicWall firewall adds routing plus more advanced security functions.

A business-grade firewall, such as SonicWall, can help your organization:

- Monitor and control traffic entering and leaving the network

Wi-Fi is convenient. But not every business device should depend on it.

A reliable office network is not completely wired or completely wireless. The best setup is usually a mix of both, based on how each device is used.

Use Wi-Fi where mobility matters. Hardwire devices where consistency matters most.

Devices that should usually be hardwired:

- Desktop computers that stay in one place

- Servers and network storage

- Printers and scanners

- VoIP phones

- Wireless access points

- Security cameras and door-access systems

- Conference-room equipment

- Point-of-sale terminals

- Backup appliances and other critical infrastructure

- Wired Ethernet connections are generally more stable and less affected by walls, distance, wireless interference, signal strength, and network congestion than Wi-Fi.

Devices that work well on Wi-Fi:

- Laptops

- Smartphones

- Tablets

- Guest devices

- Hot-desk workstations

Your office may have a fast Internet plan, but employees can still deal with dropped calls, slow cloud apps, buffering video, and frustrating delays. Often, the issue is inside the building, not with the Internet provider.

Here are five common reasons business Wi-Fi slows down:

1. Poor access point placement

Wi-Fi signals weaken through walls, ceilings, metal, concrete, and other physical barriers. An access point hidden in a closet or placed at one end of the office may leave employees with weak coverage and dead zones.

2. Too many connected devices

Laptops, phones, tablets, printers, cameras, guest devices, smart TVs, and IoT equipment all compete for the same wireless capacity. Older access points may not be designed to support today’s device-heavy workplace.

3. Wireless interference

Nearby Wi-Fi networks, Bluetooth devices, wireless cameras, microwaves, cordless phones, and even certain lighting can interfere with wireless performance.

4. Outdated equipment or firmware

Older routers and access points can struggle with modern workloads, security standards, and device counts. Outdated firmware can also affect both performance and security.

5. Bandwidth is being used elsewhere

Cloud backups, video meetings, large file transfers, streaming, system updates, and guest-network traffic can consume available bandwidth, especially when there is no traffic management in place.

Not everything your AI reads is meant for you to see. Prompt injection happens when attackers hide malicious instructions inside content an AI tool processes, such as emails, webpages, PDFs, resumes, support tickets, or uploaded documents.

One simple tactic is hiding text in white font on a white background.

To a person, the document looks normal. To an AI assistant, that hidden text can still be read as an instruction.

For example, a hidden prompt may try to tell an AI tool to ignore its assigned task, reveal confidential information, access files, or take an unauthorized action.

This is called indirect prompt injection. The attacker does not need direct access to your AI system. They only need it to process content they control. Hidden instructions can also be concealed using zero-size text, invisible Unicode characters, opacity settings, or text placed off-screen.

As businesses connect AI to email, documents, knowledge bases, customer systems, and workflows, every untrusted file or webpage can become part of the attack surface.

Help reduce the risk:

- Treat external content as untrusted, even when it looks harmless.

- Limit the data, tools, and actions available to AI systems.

- Require human approval before AI sends messages, changes records, shares sensitive data, or triggers financial actions.

- Scan documents and uploads for hidden text, unusual formatting, and embedded content.

- Monitor AI activity for unexpected tool use or sensitive-data access.

- Test AI workflows for direct and indirect prompt injection before deployment.

- AI can drive real business value, but it should not blindly follow every instruction it encounters.

- Trust the workflow, not every instruction it reads.

A convincing email, compromised vendor account, or AI-polished impersonation can be enough to trigger a fraudulent payment request. It should never be enough to approve one.

In 2025, Business Email Compromise losses reached approximately $3.04 billion, making BEC one of the most financially damaging cybercrime categories.

Here’s how a typical attack unfolds:

- An employee, executive, or vendor email account is compromisedor impersonated.

- The attacker monitors conversations, invoices, and payment processes.

- A request arrives to change banking details, redirect a payment, reset credentials, or approve an “urgent” wire transfer.

- The recipient acts quickly without independently verifying the request.

- AI is making these emails more believable. That means organizations can’t rely only on spotting bad grammar or suspicious wording.

A stronger defense combines awareness with practical safeguards:

- Require independent, out-of-band verification for payment changes, wire requests, payroll updates, and sensitive account changes. Call a known number—not one included in the email.

- Require dual approval for wire transfers and vendor banking changes.

- Use phishing-resistant MFA for email, financial systems, privileged accounts, and remote access. CISA identifies phishing-resistant MFA as an important defense against credential theft and MFA-bypass attacks.

- Monitor for suspicious mailbox forwarding rules, unfamiliar sign-ins, and unauthorized app access.

- Train employees to evaluate the intent of a request—not just how legitimate it looks.

- The goal is not to make people afraid of email. It’s to ensure one convincing message cannot bypass the controls protecting your organization.

- When a payment request is urgent, unusual, or outside the normal process: pause, verify, and protect the payment.

Antivirus software is an important layer of protection—but it is not a green light to open every file.

Cybercriminals constantly change how malicious files behave. A new or cleverly disguised file may not be recognized immediately, even when it is scanned by security software. That is why an unexpected attachment, link, invoice, or shared document should always be treated carefully—even if your antivirus says it is clean.

Before opening a file, pause and ask:

Were you expecting it?

Do you recognize and trust the sender?

Does the file name, request, or timing make sense?

Everyday Protection Tips

Pause before opening attachments. Be especially cautious if you were not expecting the file.

Look for red flags. Urgent language, unusual requests, misspellings, or an unfamiliar sender address are reasons to stop and check.

Use strong, unique passwords. A password manager can make this much easier.

Turn on multifactor authentication. It adds protection to your accounts beyond a password.

Back up important files. Make sure essential business data is backed up regularly.

When in doubt, ask. If a file, link, or request feels off, do not click—check with your IT team first.
