AI degrees are on the rise, but are they the answer to the AI skills gap?

Elena Magrini talked with Jeff Selingo about new Lightcast research which found that only 6% of people working in AI hold an AI-related degree. And with the majority of jobs requiring AI skills now outside the tech sector, the opportunity for colleges goes beyond creating new AI-specific programs.

The real opportunity? Embedding AI skills into existing programs and tailoring training to the needs of different fields. Because AI isn't one skill set, and preparing the workforce requires more than one path.

Eric found his career by showing up in exactly the wrong shoes.

A friend invited him to help install ductwork one Saturday. Eric arrived in shorts, a T-shirt, and flip-flops—then learned the job was inside a dirt-and-rock crawl space.

He finished the day bruised, battered, and hooked.

“I really liked it,” he said. “You’re building something, hanging something, making something happen.”

30 years later, Eric is still working in HVAC duct installation.
