Law firm mergers are accelerating at record levels as organizations look to buy scale and geographic reach.

But buying headcount is not the same as retaining it.

According to the SurePoint State of the Legal Industry Report, a record 59 law firm combinations occurred recently, moving more than 2,200 lawyers to new firms in a single year.

Yet, the long-term data tells a different story. Post-merger retention declines steadily as the integration takes hold:

1 Year Post-Merger: Retention drops to 79%

2 Years Post-Merger: Retention falls to 74%

3 Years Post-Merger: Only 63% of personnel remain
