In 2008, manufacturers of automatically darkening eyeglass lenses faced a kind of “glass ceiling.” A team from Transitions Lenses used PSC’s corporate affiliates program to get time on the center’s Rachel supercomputer, helping them produce the first photochromic lenses made of high-impact plastic.

We are proud to announce that a $5 million NSF grant will enable PSC, with partners Hewlett Packard Enterprise , Rigetti Computing, and the University of Pittsburgh, to construct TangleLab: a hybrid quantum-classical computer.

Unlike classical computers, which calculate with zeroes and ones, quantum processing units employ the laws of quantum mechanics to compute in terms of quantum superposition and entanglement, manipulating states that are partly zero and partly one. Scientists expect that this ability to, in a sense, “calculate between the lines,” will make such devices superior to classical computers at solving certain problems in areas like chemistry, cryptography, and optimization tasks.

Smaller, faster devices are having more and more trouble dumping the heat they generate. A team led from UCLA used PSC’s flagship Bridges-2 to simulate a new metallic material that with nearly three times as much thermal conductivity as copper.
