When Tom LeNoble left Facebook, he told Mark Zuckerberg, "I wanna see you in 10 years."

Mark asked why. Tom said he'd met him at 19 and wanted to see what happened by 29. Then Tom forgot all about it.

Ten years later, a Facebook message popped up: "Still wanna have lunch?" His answer was "Heck yeah," and the story of that lunch is going in his next book. 🍽️

In a client conversation about fixing a disjointed website and message, Crystal Morris told me she used to feel embarrassed sending people to her site. Her website and her message didn't line up, she couldn't put her offerings into words, and she didn't know how to sell herself without feeling "salesy."

That's a hard spot to be in, because your website is supposed to make the next conversation easier, and hers was making it harder.

Now she says her website just feels better. It has a better energy to it, and her message comes across without her having to explain everything first.

That's the whole point of a clear message. It does the explaining, so you don't have to.

Every message on your website is a bowling ball you hand a potential client. Hand them three at once and they drop one. Your headline only needs one clear sentence.

In late 1999, Tom LeNoble had nine T-cells, and his doctor told him this was as good as it would get.

He named his T-cells and asked people to care for them.

When someone tells Tom something can't be done, his response is two words: "Watch this." Shortly after, he went back to work, and his health soared. 💪

Tom LeNoble once had six months to live and a $486,000 bill for an experimental treatment that insurance was never going to cover.

He said, "Let's see what we can do."

Long after the treatment was over, he called the clinic and asked them to file the claim anyway. The insurance paid, and they had to give him his money back. To Tom, that's what taking risks and reinventing yourself look like.

The third time Tom LeNoble heard "six months to live," three doctors told him his cancer was back in five locations and there was nothing they could do.

He chuckled. If you want to get a few doctors' attention, he says, that's how you do it.

He already had a playbook for hard news, and he knew what to do with it. 😄

Tom LeNoble's doctors told him going back to work would kill him. He bought three suits and went anyway.

He had nine T-cells at the time. His disability company gave him an extra year to fall back on, because they were sure it wouldn't work. He took a job at an internet startup, and his health soared.

Tom has been told three separate times that he had six months to live. He went on to work at walmart.com, Palm, and early Facebook, where at 50 he was old enough to be everyone's father.

On Episode 92 of From Click to Client, Tom and I talk about what success looks like after you've faced how much time you have left. He shares the Haystack Method he uses with CEOs, and the six forms of energy that fall out of balance when you push one too hard.

One question he asked a CEO is worth asking yourself. If an investor calls during dinner, you get up and take it. Would that investor get up from his dinner table to take your call? 🤔

Tom LeNoble has been told three separate times that he had six months to live.

The first time, he walked to his car, turned the rearview mirror, and spoke to the virus directly: "If you think you're gonna take me out, you're in for the fight of your life." Then he went back to work.

His question every time was the same. What happens on the seventh month?

The people who seem like natural communicators usually aren't.

They practice. Whether it's a video, a talk, or a training, they don't just wing it, because people can feel it when you do.

The more natural someone seems, the more hours they've put in. Eila Park Robertson would know, after more than 20 years in broadcast news.
