Colocation used to sell on three things: space, power, and cooling.

That's no longer enough. Enterprise tenants now show up with a different checklist — rack-level power data, exportable PUE, API access to it all.

GPU tenants make the gap worse. A standard rack draws 8-12kW steady. A GPU cluster can spike to 40-80kW and change minute to minute. Monitoring built for stable workloads doesn't hold up.

The colos managing this well treat monitoring as a customer-facing capability, not a back-office function.

Data centers run on a mix of communication protocols, and getting them to work together is critical for efficiency and uptime. Modius OpenData supports multiple industry standards, including Modbus, BACnet, and SNMP, so teams can manage diverse systems from a single platform. Our latest post breaks down how OpenData tackles protocol diversity and what that means for streamlined operations and lower costs.

Traditional perimeter security was built around a fixed network edge. Remote work, cloud hosting, mobile devices, and IoT have created exceptions to that model that most data centers still aren't accounting for.

Zero Trust Architecture addresses this by authenticating every request based on identity and context, regardless of where it originates. Most Zero Trust guidance focuses on IT. DCIM, the systems running power, cooling, and physical security, often shares the same firewalls and management network as IT, and is frequently left out of that planning.

Swipe through for what Zero Trust means for DCIM and where most data centers stand on the maturity model.

Your data center is evolving. The infrastructure supporting AI, IoT, and digital transformation demands a new level of operational visibility.

DCIM brings real-time insight into power, cooling, and IT assets across every site you manage. When the right data reaches the right teams instantly, decisions happen faster and downtime risk drops significantly.

Not all DCIM solutions are built the same. The difference between adequate and exceptional often comes down to a few key capabilities: unified data integration, multi-site scalability, support for legacy and modern systems alike, and advanced tools like predictive analytics and capacity planning.

If your team is still flying blind, it's time to change that.

Modius just published a new blog unpacking how N+1 Monitoring has evolved for today’s distributed, hybrid infrastructure. As data centers stretch across on-prem, cloud, and edge, traditional BMS tools miss critical gaps—especially device silence and cross-domain visibility.

The post breaks down why an independent audit layer (N+1) is now essential for availability, how “device blindness” creates hidden risk, and how active monitoring changes what operators can prevent—not just detect.

Not every data center needs every feature on day one.

Modius OpenData's modular architecture lets you build your DCIM deployment around your operation, not the other way around. Each module shares a unified data layer, so monitoring, analytics, power, cooling, capacity planning, and AI all work together without the complexity of stitching separate tools together.

Start with what matters most. Add the rest when you're ready.

As data center environments scale, centralized data collection can become a bottleneck—introducing latency, limiting scalability, and creating single points of failure.

Distributed data collection addresses these challenges by decentralizing how infrastructure data is gathered and processed, delivering real operational advantages:
• Scalability: Easily add collectors as new sites or devices come online
• Resilience: Independent collectors keep operations running even if one fails
• Security: Sensitive and legacy protocols stay local, with encrypted data transmission
• Efficiency: Local processing reduces bandwidth usage and improves response times

For data center operators, this means stronger uptime, faster insights, and greater ROI from DCIM investments.
