A customer came into us 5 years ago , supplied us mostly Renogy products to install into a VW Krafter , it was almost a blank canvas and it was in for 2 x 100 a/h batteries , a 3000 watt inverter , 40 amp solar regulator and dc-dc charger .
The job left and we didn’t hear from the customer till this year, life got in the way , the camper never got completed and was only used a few times .
It sat for some time and then had issues with the electrics, initially diagnosed as a faulty inverter/ charger it quickly became apparent that the batteries would not accept charge .
Rather than tell the customer the batteries needed replacement i decided to investigate further as these batteries could be opened and the bms accessed unlike many others that are sealed shut.
When bypassing the bms the 4 cells measured at only 1.8 volts , puzzling because that is what the bms is supposed to prevent.
I took a punt and made a link to connect a small 8 amp charger directly to the cells and trickle charged them for a few hours closely monitoring voltage and temps .
Once the cells were up over 12 volts i reconnected the bms and connected a 40 amp lithium charger to the battery.
To my surprise the batteries recovered and behaved normally , we refitted everything and it all tested without issue .
This is part of what we do that i believe separates us from many other places, it would have been easy to sell the customer 2 new batteries and get sales and thats what the majority of places would have done .
This vehicle is now for sale , its a great project for someone to complete , it could be an awesome camper when finished .

Another customer in this week to have their caravan modified for off grid , it all came out nice and neat and finally gave the customer a display they can rely on rather than the factory projecta system that never displayed accurately.
The customer came in a while back for a couple extra solar panels and a Victron Orion 50 amp dc-dc charger .
New System specs
2 x Renogy 300 ah lithium batteries
1x Manutec dual battery box
1x Victron Multiplus 3000 watt inverter/ charger
1x Victron 50/100 solar regulator
1x Victron 7 inch touch screen display
1x Victron Cerbo GX data hub
1x Aerial 15 amp inlet and RCD combo
The job Required rewiring the solar back down to the new solar regulator location near the batteries which was a job in itself , bypassing the projecta system So that it only acts as a master DC switch and display for the water tanks and water pump activation .
The wiring from Snowy River on the AC side was ridiculous and dangerous, normally the rcd is mounted very close to the 15 amp inlet point so the cabling and caravan is protected , on this van the cable ran for approx 5 meters to the opposite side of the caravan before it went through an RCD , so we changed that so an external RCD immediately protected the AC input .
The factory battery boxes didn’t quite allow for the fitment of the 2x 300 ah batteries so we cut them off and fitted a new dual battery box .
The wiring is rarely tidy on caravans so we also cut down some cabling around the batteries to tidy things up , often its a complete mess .
While tidying up the wiring we added an external anderson connection also wired into the Victron solar regulator so a portable panel can easily be added , now this caravan can hit the road and easily power almost anything while off grid , approximately 5 hours of run time using the air conditioner off the batteries , now that will be handy while off grid on those hot days !

A few months ago we did a fair bit of work to this Baroma Caravan , the company closed up years ago but they built a solid van . We had to source wheel spats as one was broken and it was a mission to find something remotely compatible , but we did through vintage caravan spares who have a lot of odd ball parts .
Full side reclad from an impact , new awning and hardware , some timber repairs around the rear window where the seal had failed and got left for years until wood rot had set in , many many hours spent on this job .

When people do their own wiring and have no understanding of the importance of fuses on live wires its a disaster waiting to happen !
This caravan had heavy gauge cables running nearly the length of the caravan , without conduit protection , running over sharp edges , hard wired to the batteries with no breaker or fuse , then to 2 buss bars in the front boot where the positive was unprotected , then a heap of seperate circuits in lighter gauge cable with no fuses either and eventually going to a fuse box to each circuit , probably over 10 meters of unprotected cable zig zagging all over the van before a fuse was in place .
So now when a short happened the lightest gauge wire acted like a fuse - it was the earth return path to the chassis , it eventually burnt through and saved the van from being a pile of ashes - it was so close it igniting there are charred bits of timber all through the wall .

A local company wants to make modular systems that can be easily removed as they do laser cutting and fabrication work - targeting the mining sector .
We may get involved in wiring the prototype up and nutting out future systems - i will share further if we do .
