Ghosting goes both ways. đź‘»

The candidate who vanished probably applied to a few other places the same afternoon, but one of them answered first.

The gap between “applied” and “heard back” is where good hires disappear. Not because anyone decided to ignore them. The application landed in an inbox, the manager was on the floor through two rushes, and by Thursday it was buried under thirty more.

Push keeps the entire hiring process in one place. Applications come in, replies go out, interviews get booked — all from the same screen the manager already runs the schedule on. Nobody has to remember to follow up, because the follow-up is already the next thing on the list.

Good candidates don’t wait around. And with Push, they don’t have to.

Last December already told you how many people you need this December.

What it can’t do is hire them. A good server takes a few weeks to find, screen, and get comfortable on the floor — so count back from your first big holiday party and the posting date lands a lot closer to now than you’d think.

Push handles that side of it. Post the job once, screen applicants as they come in, and watch every open role move from posted to hired in one place. So when the first party is a week or two away, you’re writing a schedule, not a job posting.

The next wave of restaurant departures lands in January.

The hiring window for it opens in November.

That’s less than two weeks away.

Most operators notice the gap in January, then spend February hiring alongside everyone else. The ones who meet it fully staffed started roughly two months earlier, while the holiday schedule was still filling up.

It’s one pattern from our 2026 Restaurant Workforce Benchmark Report, built on Push platform data from roughly 3,500 operators.

January isn’t a surprise. Treat it like a reservation.

Holiday hiring across eight locations is not the same problem as filling one opening.

Which is why most hiring tool comparisons don't help. Indeed vs. Poached vs. Workstream isn't a fair fight — they're different categories, built for different hiring volumes. A general job board can carry a single location through a slow month. But it starts to strain when every location needs a few extra hands on the floor for the same six weeks.

We sorted the market into five categories and mapped each one to the operation it actually serves. Making holiday hiring as easy as ever.

The scariest first shift isn't the one with the Saturday rush. It's the one where nobody knew they were coming.

No login. Paperwork still in someone's inbox. A section assigned by whoever noticed the new face first.

With Push, the plan exists before the shift does. Onboarding paperwork is signed and in payroll before day one. The schedule pairs them with a designated trainer instead of whoever happens to be working. And the first solo shift is a decision you made, not something that happened at 7 p.m. because someone called out.

New hires decide fast whether they're staying. Give them a first week that makes the answer easy.

Turnover is the most expensive line item that never shows up on the P&L.

Restaurant turnover runs north of 75%, and every person who walks costs $3,500 to $6,000 to replace. For a 50-person restaurant, that's more than $200,000 a year going out the back door.

Here's the part most schedules miss: pay isn't the only reason people leave.

Schedule inflexibility is the second-biggest driver of voluntary turnover — and it's the one you can fix this week.

Restaurants that publish schedules two weeks out see 15–25% lower voluntary turnover. That's not a perk. It's retention baked into the way you run.

Push scheduling does the heavy lifting:

âś“ Demand-based forecasting, so you're never over- or under-staffed

âś“ Schedules published early, so your team can plan their lives around them

âś“ Swaps and time-off handled from their phone, approved from yours

Overtime almost never shows up as a decision. It shows up as a favor or an oversight.

Someone picks up a shift for a friend. A closer stays late because the dish pit's behind. A strong server gets scheduled six days because she's the one you trust. Each one makes sense on its own. But together, they're a paycheck at time-and-a-half that nobody approved.

Push watches hours as they accumulate, not after. When someone's on track to cross the line, the manager on the floor knows before the shift ends — with time to swap a closer, cut a section, or make the call on purpose instead of finding out on Monday.

The overtime you planned for is a cost. The overtime you didn't is a surprise. Push gets rid of the second kind.

An exit interview is the most expensive survey a restaurant runs. It tells you exactly why someone left, two weeks after you could have done anything about it.

The decision to quit is usually made weeks before the notice. And it leaves tracks: availability that quietly narrows to weekends, an increase in shift drops and swap requests, a line cook coming up on the one-year mark with no conversation about what's next. An instance here or there is normal. Three from the same person in the same month is a decision in progress.

September was the biggest departure month. January is the next wave — 7,932 departures on our platform this past January, up a third in three years — and the people who leave then mostly decide over the holidays, while every manager is too busy to notice.

The signals worth watching, and what to do in November instead of January. Read it here: https://web.pushoperations.com/4AOtDtV

September's restaurant departures were decided weeks before anyone quit. Here are the early signals to watch, and how to get ahead of the January wave.

It's Thanksgiving in Canada, which means a lot of restaurant teams worked hard this weekend so everyone else could enjoy it.

Most operators want to show their appreciation. But a generic "Thanks everyone!" after close fades by Wednesday, and 44% of restaurant workers who leave say a lack of recognition was part of why.

What a team actually remembers and appreciates:

âś“ Publishing the holiday schedule early and keeping it.

âś“ Being paid on time, with the overtime right. A correction on the next check undoes the thank-you.

âś“ Specific praise. "Great shift" is noise. "You ran the patio alone for two hours Saturday" is something a person carries home.

âś“ Extra hours going to the people who want them. Your part-timers are watching how they get handed out.

âś“ Day-off requests that get honored. If someone asked for Monday off three weeks ago, Monday is off.

In the spirit of Thanksgiving, take an extra moment today to show your team some appreciation. Whether it's dessert on the house or a specific thank-you after a grueling weekend, it costs you almost nothing — and it can be worth more than the raise you can't always give.

Nobody opened a restaurant to spend Monday reconciling timecards.

But that's what payroll looks like for a lot of multi-unit operators. Hours pulled from one system, tips from another, overtime checked by hand, and every correction keyed in twice. Across eight locations, a small error rate isn't a rounding issue. It's a compliance issue.

Automated payroll means the punches, tips, and pay rates already live where payroll runs. The period closes, you review, you approve.

We wrote up what automation actually covers, what to look for in a platform, and when outsourcing makes more sense than running it in-house.
