Do you remember when learning just meant being curious? It can be easy to forget sometimes.

At , inquiry-based learning doesn’t replace standards. It’s how learners meet them. Students take ownership of their learning, while still working toward clear graduation requirements and core competencies.

It challenges a common misconception that student-driven learning lacks structure or rigor.

What we saw was a model where curiosity, responsibility, and high expectations work together.

So the question isn’t whether inquiry-based models work, it’s what parts of it are we ready to bring into our own classrooms?

After visiting the Pacific School of Innovation & Inquiry , our team had a lot of thoughts.

What happens when you shift the focus from students to learners and make school less about studying and more about building real understanding?

This experience challenged us to think differently about student agency, inquiry-based learning, and what school can look like in today’s world.

Part 3 of 4

What does school look like when curiosity drives the learning?

When we stepped inside the Pacific School of Innovation & Inquiry in Victoria, BC, the first thing we noticed was how different it felt.

Students are called learners, and teachers act more like facilitators and coaches. Together they co-create personalized learning paths connected to the BC curriculum.

Instead of traditional classrooms, learners move through spaces designed to support their inquiries — from meeting rooms and tech labs to open studios for building, designing, and creating.

It’s a model built around curiosity, responsibility, and trust.

Speaking up sounds simple. But it isn’t always.

This week, the Classmate team worked with Magda and Jackie from Aitken Leadership Group to focus on group dynamics, communication, and the unseen forces that shape how teams function.

Status. Certainty. Autonomy. Relatedness. Fairness.

When we can name these, we can respond with intention, not instinct.

This kind of work matters to us because we operate in deeply relational spaces: schools, leadership teams, classrooms, communities. We ask educators to reflect, adapt, and collaborate—and that means holding ourselves to the same standard.

Doing the internal work is part of the work.

This work is grounded in the SCARF model—a simple, research-informed way to understand the social triggers that shape how teams show up and respond together.

We’re often asked to help teachers create templates for tools like . 📘

It’s easy for templates to become overloaded with instructions and clicks, and to overcomplicate things because designing can be fun. But clarity often comes from doing less. ✨

Keep It Short and Simple, right? Something we all know, but sometimes need a gentle reminder.

This holiday season, we hope you find a few moments to refresh and re-energize, however that looks for you. ✨🎄

We’ve put together a small, custom-made gift for the educators we work alongside. Because you all deserve a little self-care, especially this time of year. 💛🍎

Each unique blend of essential oils was thoughtfully chosen, mixed, and labelled by our teammate Nick (our Classmate holiday elf, who truly knows how to care for others).

We’re hand-delivering over 500 bottles to educators at the schools we work with, just in time for the holidays. 🎁🚗

☀️ Liquid Sunshine for tired mornings.
🌿 Refresh Mint for long afternoons.
💙 Immunity Boost for everything in between.

Which blend works for you?

Happy holidays from all of us at Classmate. 🎄💫

What would you actually show up for?
Is there something missing you’d like to see?

Tell us your faves, your hot takes, and your own wild ideas in the comments. 👇
