This is my Dad, Akeem Rashad (Billy Williams)
He is the reason I fell in love with music
It’s honestly hard to know where to start with this one. It’s cliche to say “music inspires me”, so I won’t. But what I will say is that my connection to lyrics has allowed me to grow an emotional depth that I’m not sure would exist otherwise. My dad made that possible.
He is the reason why songs make me deeply emotional.
I was maybe around 8 or 9 when he played ‘As’ by Stevie Wonder for me. He explained the supernatural phenomenons as it related to love and as it related to how he loved me. The lyrics “As today I know I’m living but tomorrow / could make me the past / but that I mustn’t fear / For I know deep my mind / the love of me I left behind / cause I’ll be loving you always” That particular part stuck with me after he passed and still helps me through the grieving process of the last 22 years.
He is the reason why my taste is music is so vast.
Some of my favorite memories with my dad include music. Whether it was hearing his car radio before he actually reached the house, going to concerts, singing duets together or just quietly listening to music in the same room. He grew up in a time where everyone thought they were a step away from being on Motown. He had an amazing singing voice for someone who never classically trained. And he never was shy about it. He’d sing “oh the sweet delight to sing with all my might...” from Minnie Riperton’s Reasons. We loved live music. We’ve seen Prince twice. Once when I was just three years old (yes, 3) apparently dressed in all purple. I have no memory or photos of this, sadly. And then in 2004, our last concert together. We’ve seen Issac Hayes at the Fox Theater and Yanni at the Palace. Outside of the concerts, groups like The Temptations, The Dramatics, Donny Hathaway were always in rotation. And it wasn’t just ‘old school’ or R&B music either. I introduced him to Mos Def’s Black on Both Sides and that became a mainstay in his CD player.
And of course, the motto: Everything ALWAYS works out RIGHT for me. ALWAYS.
