Marcus Lemonis once said, 'Change is the only thing that is constant in business, and the only way to manage that change is to get comfortable with being uncomfortable.' with 15 years at Data Security, Inc.®, Kimberly Heimes has taken this lesson to heart.

With 15 years at Data Security, Inc.®, Kimberly Heimes has taken that lesson to heart.

Kimberly joined Data Security, Inc.® as a Sales Representative. About nine months in, her manager approached her with an opportunity that included full-time contracting and international sales. "At the time, I was terrified because it was completely outside my comfort zone. Sales was familiar, and this opportunity represented a significant change." She took it anyway. "Fifteen years later, I'm grateful I took that leap."

Today Kimberly serves as our Director of Contract Administration & Compliance, and her role covers Contracts, Order Administration, Facility Security, office management, and most recently HR. Her reach touches every corner of the company. "One of my favorite things about Data Security, Inc.® is that we design, manufacture, sell, and support all of our equipment in-house. That's something that truly sets us apart. On any given day, I might be involved in discussions about new product designs, helping solve shipping challenges, support a sales opportunity, or work through contract or compliance matters. That level of collaboration keeps every day interesting."

That big-picture perspective also shapes how she thinks about data destruction and the gap between what people assume and what's actually true. "The biggest misconception is that deleting a file means the data is gone forever, or that simply smashing a hard drive with a hammer makes the data unrecoverable. Most people are genuinely surprised to learn just how little of a hard drive is needed for data recovery, which is why certified data destruction is so important."

Her team reflects the same philosophy. "Although our department is small, we are incredibly impactful. We enjoy being a trusted resource, supporting our colleagues, and helping all of the other teams succeed."

And the comfort zone she pushed past early in her career? She kept pushing it. "The opportunity I had to travel internationally was something I'll never forget. My last trip to Australia is especially memorable. After we completed our work, we took the opportunity to do the Sydney Harbour Bridge Climb, which took us 440 feet above the harbor. As someone who is terrified of heights, I knew I had to be first in line and resist the urge to look down. Stepping outside my comfort zone was well worth it. The reward was an unforgettable view of the Sydney Opera House and one of the most incredible experiences of my career."

Fifteen years in, Kimberly is still taking the leap.

Do you know what happens to your data after it leaves your hands?

Most organizations have strong internal protocols, but the moment sensitive data is shared with a destruction vendor, that control gets handed off too. And if they're not held to the same standards you are, your organization is exposed.

When a third party handles your data, your organization doesn't hand off the responsibility that comes with it. Regulatory scrutiny, reputational exposure, customer trust, those stay with you. Which means the standards you hold internally need to travel with your data wherever it goes.

The good news is that most vendors want to do this right. But it’s still your responsibility to verify it. Here are a few places to start:

1. Require documented proof: Certificates of destruction, chain-of-custody documentation, and audit trails aren't optional. They're your legal protection if something goes wrong.

2. Vet your vendors. Do they follow NSA, NIST or equivalent standards? Are their processes documented and defensible? Are they meeting the regulations required in your industry and region? What devices are they using?

3. Keep checking in. Standards change and regulations evolve. A vendor who met your standards two years ago may not meet them today. Build in regular reviews so your third-party destruction stays as strong as your internal protocols.

The difference between a vendor that protects you and one that exposes you comes down to knowing your standards and making sure they’re met.

If you're not sure whether your current vendor relationships are built to withstand a compliance review, we're happy to help you take a closer look: https://datasecurityinc.com/contact-us/
