Tech time machine: what kind of internet connection made a whole series of beeps and squeals before you could get online?

Answer: dial-up internet. A modem used the telephone line to make the connection. If you remember negotiating for time on the family phone line, you probably didn't need the hint.

An email marked URGENT doesn't get to be the boss of your afternoon.

If a message asks you to sign in, pay, or open something unexpected, take a moment to check it another way. Open the company's app or type its known website address yourself. If you need to call, use a number from its official website or a statement you already trust.

A familiar name or logo isn't enough to prove who sent a message. And there's no shame in asking for a second pair of eyes before you click.

Ever scroll up and down a long web page looking for one word, then forget which direction you were going?

Try this in Chrome:

Windows: press Ctrl + F.
Mac: press Command + F.

Type the word or phrase you're looking for. The browser highlights matching text on the current page. Safari on a Mac also uses Command + F.

It's a small shortcut that can save a surprising amount of scrolling. It searches the page you're viewing, so you don't have to start a whole new web search.

New computer still in the box because the old one has all your stuff? The cardboard is getting a little too comfortable.

Repair it, upgrade it, or replace it? The computer usually votes for whichever option involves the most confusing shopping tabs.

Before you spend money, it helps to look at what you use the computer for, what's going wrong, and whether the hardware and software still fit your needs.

A pop-up telling you to call a number immediately can make a quiet afternoon feel like a game show you never entered.

If a warning on your computer says to call a number for urgent tech support, pause. Don't call the number in the pop-up, click its links, or let someone connect to your computer because the message told you to.

Microsoft says genuine Microsoft error messages don't include a phone number to call. A scary-looking window alone doesn't tell us what's actually happening.
