EMBER Audio + Design EMBER Audio + Design is a HiFi stereo shop, modern furniture store and modern/pop art gallery, located in downtown Winston-Salem, NC.

We are a classic, every-customer-matters, stereo shop that is always growing and evolving to meet our customers needs and our own needs to play with really neat toys! We believe in in-home auditions, learning new things all the time, loving music and film, art and great design. We like to experiment with brands and see how different things fit together. We welcome input, feedback and requests. Most of all, we're here to help if you have any questions about anything audio or video related!

Freshly rebuilt trade-in! $2400

The Dynaudio Special 40 has long been a favorite 2-way at our shop. Full bodied, fast and neutral with a dense lower midrange.

This pair was zapped by lighting shortly after playing its first few notes, and replaced with a like pair. Considering the beauty of the cabinets, we held onto them, and today replaced every internal part, and fired them up for a test. They’re perfect, though need a little bit of break-in.

This absolutely beautiful Pilot Radio preamplifier bears a history reaching back to the company’s founding in 1919, and while its aesthetic and core concepts are direct-descendants, the ex*****on leverages modern ideas and processes.

The result is an incredibly straight forward ex*****on:

Two line level single ended inputs, and a selectable dedicated MM or MC option onboard, with a single set of single ended outputs to attach any amplifier on the market, including their own forthcoming matched mate!

An ultra simple, direct signal path, featuring 2 x 12AX7 / ECC83 and 2 x 12AU7 / ECC82 and Oil in Paper Caps, leveraging a core circuit board where most effective and otherwise a mixture of point to point wiring and mechanically stable turret connections.

It’s a beautiful unit as well. It could have looked like an anvil, but Pilot took the time to use simple design language to make something serene and handsome. It features a grill pattern calling directly back to classic Pilot designs.

Priced at $3500, this is a as pure a classic tube preamplifier as you could wish for. Zero additional fluff and among the richest tones we’ve ever heard with class defining depth and weight.

Make time to come give it a listen, and keep an eye out for new marvels on the way from this legendary house of sound!

Come with us to Low Five Analog Archive for an incredible evening of discussion, community and sharing! Little Pep will be serving drinks and you can swing by at Fancy Groceries and grab a coffee too!

How to Vinyl Night:
- fill out an entry on the sign up sheet with your name, artist, album and track
- keep selections under six minutes (or ask for special dispensation)
- please keep chatter to a minimum during playback and presentation.
- when it’s your turn, be ready to tell us about your awesome thing!
- respect other humans. Your host (Ember/Chris) is relatively large and will not tolerate bullies
- snacks are welcome, but please keep a tidy area. Let’s treat this place with love.

During our time at ICFF we visited FLOS ✨

Their showroom in NY showed all the possibilities of lighting from configuration, portability and design. Seeing all these fixtures from screen to in person truly was a sight to behold.

Fresh Trade-in! $3800

This RP10 with a very well cared for Apheta2 cartridge just arrived. Our client (single owner) has kept it in top form these last few years, and we’ve reconditioned and oiled all the bits and bobs, so it’s essentially as-new, with all the original materials, box and both the standard cover and the skeletal cover, as this deck can either sit in its rectangular frame or break out into the more modern skeletal shape common to the modern upper-range Planar tables.

Make no mistake. While it’s a slightly older design, it is a reference deck with adjoining cart designed specifically for this arm and table. It’s a serious performance level at a truly fair price - and ready to audition here at the shop!

An icon of design since its very inception 🤩

The Barcelona Chair was birthed through a partnership between designers Mies van der Rohe and Lilly Reich. Encapsulating the Bauhaus mantra of “less is more,” the design was inspired by Roman folding chairs. Though initially created for the German Pavilion at the 1929 World’s Fair, the chair took on a life of its own when Knoll acquired the manufacturing rights in 1964 and made it an object of desire worldwide. 

Still crafted to the designer’s stringent specifications, nearly every step in making the Barcelona chair is done by hand using the best available materials and the highest construction standards. Each chair is comprised of two cushions and 40 individual leather or fabric panels. Panels are cut, hand-welted and hand-tufted with leather and buttons produced from a single cowhide. Beneath, the frame consists of premium-grade 304 bar stock stainless steel. The chair’s single piece construction ensures long-term durability. Frame is shaped, welded and hand-buffed to a mirror finish while the cushions rest on 17 color coordinated belting straps attached with stainless steel screws.
